In their melancholy fiction short, Roya Ghanavati and Theresa Philine Kramer weave together present and past. Old VHS footage of a happy dancing child becomes intermingled with calm, almost static images of a young woman trying to meet her father’s gaze: Manoush, who has come to Frankfurt to tell her Baba about her depression. A silence descends between the two of them, which is as expressive as any number of words. The camerawork and sound allow pauses, looks and even breathing to speak volumes; the distance between them becomes physically tangible. A film about memory, identity and belonging – and about what remains when two people love each other so much that they can barely reach one another.
