THE BEYOND BAGEL
A bagel, ingredients from different dimensions and a ravenous alien – these form the basis for experimental animated comedy The Beyond Bagel. The film links together absurd humour with a visual firework display of different techniques: stop motion, digital animation and hand-drawn elements bring Plasticine, stick men and puppets to life. Embedded within a propulsive soundtrack of Eurodance beats, a shifting style emerges that is equal parts comedy and surreal adventure, all couched in a retro aesthetic reminiscent of Miami Vice. The film team connects independent animated art to the realm of the experimental short film and doesn’t just demonstrate invention in so doing, but also turns a banal meal into a cosmic odyssey.
